Become a Volunteer Alzheimer associations are reliant on volunteers for their help and support. Volunteers are needed to fundraise, help with campaigns, run the office, support people with dementia, support their caregivers, raise awareness, the list is endless. If you have any free time and are interested in volunteering, why not contact us and find out how you can help. One of the ways in which those who provide care find help and relief is when they meet with others in the same situation as themselves. A self-help group provides an opportunity for such meetings to occur. The purpose of a self-help group is to provide support to the members and thus allow them to cope better by:
There are many different kinds of self-help groups. No one kind is necessarily better than another. What matters is that they are helpful to those who take part. When you start a group, you will want to find an approach that is most appropriate for you and the other members of your group. You may use the ideas in the booklet produced by ADI as a starting point, or you may have your own ideas. For a copy of the booklet Starting a
self-help group, please contact the secretariat. Alzheimer's disease and the related dementias are chronic progressive diseases and ultimately fatal. Research is rapidly progressing but it may be many years before cures emerge. In the meantime people with dementia and their caregivers need support and practical help. Creating an Alzheimer association is the most efficient way to achieve help for the largest possible number of people. An association helps to co-ordinate, guide and advise local activities. Once an organization is up and running, it raises public awareness which leads to increased resources for both care and research.
